Recent from Al Jazeera English:
Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “🇵🇸 What’s next for Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah? | The Stream” – below is their description.
Violent police crackdowns on Palestinians have been frequent in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of occupied East Jerusalem as people have continued to protest the threatened expulsion by Jewish settlers of dozens of Palestinian families from their homes.
Israel has called it “a real-estate dispute” while Palestinians and rights groups say the attempted evictions are an example of apartheid-style laws being used to drive out Palestinian families in favour of Israeli settlers. Tensions have been high in the neighbourhood for months and the heavy-handed suppression of Palestinian protests there proved the flashpoint for Israel’s 11-day bombardment of Gaza last month.
Israel last week swore in a new coalition government, headed by right-wing ultra-nationalist prime minister Naftali Bennett, who has a history of supporting Jewish settlements and the annexation of most of the West Bank.
So how will the row over forced expulsions and illegal settlement building play out in the coming months? In this episode of The Stream, we’ll look at some of the ongoing stories in Israel-Palestine and ask what impact the new government might have.
