MMORPG Game “Rift” Sets World Record for Virtual Marriages

Gamers get hitched for Rift world record attempt

The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Rift has set a Guinness World Record for the number of in-game marriages performed in 24 hours. Recorded for a special gamers edition of the infamous records book, the virtual Valentine’s day weddings topped out at 21,879. The gamers who took part in the record will receive a special status as “The Avowed”.

Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor for Guinness World Records, said of the attempt:

“It’s great to see the seeds of love blooming in virtual worlds, and particularly impressive to see so many gamers getting together to say their vows for one event like this. The evidence submitted was of a very high standard and we even witnessed some of the ceremonies ourselves, so this achievement will definitely be considered for the next Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.”

Owners Trion say that the game has made $100 million in revenues during the past year.
