Martin Mathathi Wins Great North Run 2011

Martin Mathathi of Kenya has won the Great North Run 2011 along with fellow countrywoman Lucy Karbu. He finished the course in a record time of 00:58.56 ahead of Emmanuel Mutai and Jonathan Maiyo.

Lucy Karbuu won the women’s race in 01:07.06.

Over 50,000 people took part in the half marathon including X Factor star Joe McElderry and model Nell McAndrew.

The Red Arrows made a flypast as Mo Farah shot the starter’s gun, flying in a “missing man” formation in honour of their late team member Flt Lt. Jon Egging who was killed in a crash this year. His widow, Dr Emma Egging, took part in the run along with another partner of the team and their ground commander. The Jon Egging Trust will be formed shortly afterwards to help young people to  get the opportunity to fly.
