Police are reporting multiple fatalities after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand at 12.51pm today. Todays quake is thought to be worse than the 7.1 magnitude quake that hit 5 months ago, as many more people were in the CBD.
Many buildings are believed to have collapsed with people trapped inside.
“It is huge. We just don’t know if there are people under this rubble,” a priest standing outside the rubble of the damaged cathedral told New Zealand television.
Hospitals have been evacuated, and triage centres have been set up around the city to deal with the injured. The risk of aftershocks and further damage is quite extreme, with many building in danger of further collapse, and many cars crushed.
It is thought the epicentre of the quake hit 10km south west of the city.
