A new corkscrew from Coravin allows wine aficionados to drink vintage bottles of wine, just one glass at a time.
The technology works on the premise that when pulling a cork from the bottle to pour wine, the wine is exposed to air and oxidation begins.
The Coravin Wine Access System leaves the cork in place. Instead, a thin, hollow needle passes through the foil and cork to access the wine. The bottle is then pressurized with argon, an inert gas often used by winemakers. The argon pressurization pushes the wine through the needle so that it flows into the glass without letting any oxygen into the bottle.
Once the needle is removed, the cork naturally reseals itself, and the remaining wine continues to evolve naturally.
Wine expert Robert Parker said Coravin is “the most transformational and exciting new product for wine lovers that has been developed or invented in the last 30-plus years.”
The Coravin 1000 will be released in the United States, priced at $299. The Coravin Capsule three-pack will be available for $29.95.
