Arzu Kaprol at amFAR 25th Anniversary Gala Party in New York

Haute Couture designer, Arzu Kaprol, has showcased a series of red gowns in honour of the AIDS charity amFAR at a glamourous gala party in New York.

Jennifer Hudson, Heidi Klum, Nicky Minaj, Ke$ha, Shontelle, Courtney Love and Liza Minelli all performed at the event which took place at the prestigious Museum Of Modern Art of New York City on Tuesday 14th June 2011.

A men’s fashion show encompassed pieces by Vivienne Westwood, Thom Browne and Roberto Cavalli. On the women’s side, a handful of celebrities and supermodels including Jessica White and the singer Eve made appearances in red symbolising the Red Ribbon of the fight against AIDS.

Red couture dresses were designed specially for the gala by the Turkish designer. The Global Herald spoke to her about the occasion:

What does the campaign against AIDS mean to you? Why do you support this event in particular?

“Aids is a global disease that humanity has been fighting against for the last 25 years and amFar is trying to make aids history. I just did a small support with my art & work for this special night at the MOMA for the 25th anniversary of amFar. I created 7 red dresses to represent the red ribbon.”

How does the process of designing couture dresses compare to your other work on ready-to-wear and household textiles?

“The couture dresses are my favorite pieces because it is all about the details, the craftmanship and the refinement. I enjoy using unexpected materials, technics and accessories together to create the final piece.”

Where in the world will your work take you during June? Are you planning to travel or stay in Turkey?

“Now, I am flying back to Istanbul where I will finish the last pieces of our pre-collection that will be revealed in Paris beginning of July. Next week I’ll be flying to Paris where we are starting to plan our next show on October Paris Fashion Week calendar. Finally, I’ll travel back home, book some off time to enjoy my twin boys and my family.”

The gowns themselves are panelled satin and crushed velvet red dresses of varying lengths, teamed with laser cut perspex moulded boleros.

The Foundation for AIDS Research, known as amFAR, funds research into HIV/AIDS. Since 1985, the non-profit organisation has invested nearly $325 million and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.

The human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) are two species of Lentivirus (a subgroup of retrovirus) that infect humans. Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.

Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype. In most cases, HIV is a sexually transmitted infection and occurs by contact with or transfer of blood, pre-ejaculate, semen, and vaginal fluids. Research has shown (for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples) that HIV is untransmittable through condomless sexual intercourse if the HIV-positive partner has a consistently undetectable viral load.

Non-sexual transmission can occur from an infected mother to her infant during pregnancy, during childbirth by exposure to her blood or vaginal fluid, and through breast milk. Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells.
