Robbing the Poor

Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project published this video item, entitled “Robbing the Poor” – below is their description.

In 2015, reporters from OCCRP’s network broke the story of how 19 million euros were stolen from a European Union project to provide food to hungry Romanians. Four suspects — two of whom prosecutors say were part of a criminal gang the police have dubbed “the Universals” — are now on trial, charged with fraud, but the destination of the stolen cash has yet to be made public.

We managed to trace some of the missing funds and found that they were used to splash out on luxuries including a posh hotel stay, an expensive meal, and a designer handbag, as well as properties and even a share of a wood pellet factory.
