On Nov. 20, Harvard Law School’s Center on the Legal Profession hosted a virtual conference titled “Online Courts: Perspectives from the Bench and the Bar.

The event was dedicated to the late Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph D. Gants ’80, ’80, a tireless advocate for access to justice, died on Sept. 14. Gants was also honored with an HLS Award for Professional Excellence; accepted by his wife Deborah Ramirez ’81 of Northeastern Law School. Gants’ friend and colleague Harold Hongju Koh ’80 of Yale Law School delivered a tribute address, recalling that Gants was excited by the potential of online courts to “meet the users where they are,” particularly through smartphones.
