Law: Barack Obama to Sign New Law Permitting Open Homosexuality in US Military

Barack Obama, president of the United States of America, is set to sign a new law this week allowing open homosexuality within the US military forces for the first time in history.

The “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, which had been in place since 1993, meant that while it was permissible to be homosexual within the country’s military service, it was not permissible to either enquire about, nor disclose one’s sexuality. More than 13,000 serving officers were dismissed under the law, which was overturned in Congress a week ago.

The decision to allow openly gay members to serve in the military comes following a report by the Pentagon, which indicated that it would have ‘little impact’ upon current military action taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Senate and House of Representatives have approved the new law, which was supported and campaigned for by Obama’s Democratic Party, meaning that all that remains is for the President to sign the Bill repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell”.

However, the new law will not come into force until 60 days has elapsed since the signing of the Repeal by President Obama, meaning, until such a time, it is still possible for homosexual service people to be dismissed under the outgoing “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.
