India Celebrates Independence Day

Schoolchildren make up the Indian flag

India has celebrated its Independence Day against a backdrop of tight security with sharpshooters guarding the red fort and troops at the Line of Control on high alert. A three-tier security guard surrounded Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar – the main venue of Independence day celebrations.

The Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, took part in a flag raising ceremony at the 17th century Mughal-era Red Fort. The parade of troops in full regalia was somewhat dampened by the rain, though a human flag made up of hundreds of schoolchildren dressed in Indian colours made an impressive display outside the fort.

India gained independence from the British empire at midnight on the morning of 15th August 1947.
