ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: Zimbabwe Defeat Canada by 175 Runs in Group A Clash

Zimbabwe and Canada met at Nagpur, for a Group A ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 clash on Monday 28th February 2011, in a match which offered both sides the opportunity to get off the mark in the group phase, and record a first win of the tournament.

It was Zimbabwe who took this opportunity, as they won the toss, and elected to bat, before piling on 298 for 9 from their 50 overs. When Canada were removed for 123 All Out in just over 43 overs, Zimbabwe won by 175 runs.

Taibu was the top batsman for Zimbabwe, as he got very close to a century, batting from number three: he picked up 98 runs, before he was caught by Davison from the bowling of Rao.

C Ervine (85) was also impressive in a third wicket stand of 181 runs with Taibu; which inflicted most of the damage on an otherwise reasonable Canadian performance. Rao also accounted for Ervine, caught Bagai, en route to collecting the best figures for Canada, of 4 for 57 from his 10 overs.

The Canada batsmen failed to make much of an impression, and were certainly not helped by their openers, who lasted seconds, rather than minutes, at the crease: Davison made 0, Kumar made 1. They were reduced to 7 runs for 3 wickets when the number four batsman, Bagai, made a Golden Duck, too, in a spell of destructive bowling from Price.

Price collected 3 wickets for just 16 runs from the eventual 8 overs he bowled, though it was these early successes which all but assured victory for Zimbabwe, as Canada were eventually taken for just 123 runs, giving Zimbabwe the win by 175. Canada’s top-scoring batsman was Surkari, who made 26 runs from number seven.
