India have opened the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with an emphatic victory over Bangladesh in Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Bangladesh.
India set a huge score of 370 for 4 wickets after being put into bat by Bangladesh, who won the toss and elected to field. The bulk of India’s runs came from the impressive Sehwag (175) and Kohli (100 Not Out), who put on a huge partnership of 203 runs, though each of India’s batsmen made an impact with the bat.
None of the Bangladesh bowlers managed more than one wicket, though Shakib’s figures of 1 wicket for 61 runs off his 10 overs were perhaps the best.
Bangladesh, despite getting most of their top order batsmen off to a start, were unable to build on this, and eventually reached the 50.0 over limit with the score on 283 for 9 wickets, 87 runs short of India’s total, though runs had been scored by Ikbal (70) and Shakib (55) they were never, at any stage, coming fast enough to catch and pass the huge Indian total.
The pick of the Indian bowlers was Patel, who collected 4 wickets for just 48 runs off his 10 overs.
If Bangladesh bat this well next time, however, they can expect to get a positive result from their match with Ireland. India will be full of confidence from this result, and look to be the team to beat in this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup on today’s evidence, at least.
