“George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview” on National Geographic Channel

George W. Bush

National Geographic Channel will air a special 2 hour interview with George W. Bush as part of the their 9/11 Week coverage. September 2011 will mark a decade since the attacks in New York which killed thousands of people and sparked two wars.

In a detailed retelling of the events of 11th September 2001 from the perspective of the President at the time, “George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview” uses archived materials from the George W. Bush Presidential Library and first-hand accounts from the man himself.

In the interview, George W. Bush explains how it felt to receive the news of the attack, what Ground Zero looked like and his reaction when told of the death of Osama Bin Laden:

“From the air it looked like … a giant scar. But when I actually got to the site, it was like walking into hell.”

“One of my concerns, like the concerns of other husbands and wives, was, ‘Was my spouse okay? Was Laura okay?’ And my second concern was ‘Were our girls okay?’”

“President Obama called me [and] told me that Osama bin Laden had been killed. And my response was, I congratulated him, and the special operators that conducted a very dangerous mission.… And so I was grateful. I didn’t feel any great sense of happiness or jubilation. I felt a sense of closure. And I felt a sense of gratitude that justice had been done.”

“Eventually, September the 11th will be a day on the calendar; it’ll be like Pearl Harbor Day. For those of us who lived through it, it’ll be a day that we’ll never forget.”

The full interview will be aired in the USA on Sunday, August 28, at 10pm ET/PT and in the UK on Tuesday 6th September at 9pm on the National Geographic Channel.
