Formula 1: Bahrain Grand Prix 2011 Cancelled

The opening 2011 Formula 1 Grand Prix, which had been due to take place in Bahrain on March 13th, has today been cancelled after recent pro-democracy protests in the country resulted in several deaths.

Speaking about the cancellation of the Grand Prix, Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said :

“After the events of the past week, our nation’s priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united.”

It is not yet clear whether the race will be reorganised for a later date in the 2011 season.

Formula 1 will instead begin this season in Australia, on 27th March 2011.
