Football: UEFA Champions League 2011 Quarter Final 2nd Leg Results, Wednesday 13 April 2011

Two more teams – Schalke and real Madrid – booked their place in the 2011 UEFA Champions League Semi Finals, after both sides held onto commanding 1st leg leads in the 2nd leg of their Quarter Final matches on the evening of Wednesday 13th April 2011.

Schalke 04 2-1 Inter Milan (Aggregate 7-3)

Schalke came through their second leg with another win over Italian giants, and UEFA Champions League holders, Inter Milan, with a solid 2-1 home victory.

Raul scored the opener just before half time for the hosts, on 45 minutes, but Motta levelled the scores on the night with a goal on 50 mins. Howedes sent home fans happy, however, and secured a 7-3 aggregate scoreline with a winner on the night coming on 81 minutes.

Schalke will face Manchester United in the Semi Final.

Tottenham 0-1 Real Madrid (Aggregate 0-5)

Tottenham started this match by far the brighter than Real Madrid, despite needing four unanswered goals to make even extra time, but they were unlucky not to be at least a goal ahead at the break as Pavliuchenko and Gareth Bale both had close-looking penalty appeals turned down, while the former also fired over from inside the area following more good Tottenham wing play.

It was to be Real who opened the scoring, however, as Cristiano Ronaldo put a tame effort into Spurs’ goalkeeper, Gomes’ hands, which the Brazilian stopper inexplicably dropped into the bottom corner of his net, thereby meaning that his side would need to score six goals to qualify, and deflating an entire team in the process.

Tottenham looked a little lacklustre after that, but, following the addition of Jermain Defoe, had a couple of good chances to level on the evening – one of which was saved by the ever-impressive Casillas, while the other hit the base of the post with the keeped beaten by a downwards header. It was not to be for Spurs, who must look to the first leg dismissal of Peter Crouch, and their failure to stop simple goals in that match as the root cause of their downfall in this, their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign.

Real Madrid, who did all that was required to progress again, face an El Classico Semi Final against fierce Spanish rivals, Barcelona.
