A host of current and former Barclays Premier League stars are set to turn out for the New York Cosmos to play Manchester United at Old Trafford on the evening of Friday 5th August 2011 as players and fans gather for Paul Scholes testimonial match.
Scholes, who only played football for Manchester United since signing as a youth, announced his retirement from football in the latter part of United’s 2010/11 Premier League Championship winning season.
His testimonial, an Old Trafford sell-out, which kicks off at 19:30 British Summer Time on Friday 5th August 2011, will also see the return of Eric Cantona to Old Trafford, in his role as coach of the New York Cosmos, whom United are to face.
The New York Cosmos will feature a number of current Premier League stars, who have agreed to play to celebrate the career of one of the best midfielders in the Premier League era, including Robbie Keane and Brad Friedel. Sol Campbell and Patrick Viera, both former Arsenal players with whom Scholes dueled during his career, will also play for the Cosmos.
Former United men, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Dwight Yorke are also included in the Cosmos 19 man squad, as is World Cup winning former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, making the match sure to be a true exhibition of football.
Manchester United are coached by Sir Alex Ferguson, while the New York Cosmos are to be led by Eric Cantona. The match kicks off at 19:30 BST at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Friday 5th August.
