Football: Dawson and Huddlestone Named in Fabio Capello’s Provisional England 2010 FIFA World Cup Squad

Fabio Capello has today announced his 30-strong provisional England Squad which will train together before being pared down to just 23 who will fly to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Here is the full squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

There are a couple of new faces- notably the Spurs centre back Carlos Tevez called “the best English player I have faced”, Michael Dawson, and the Manchester City right-sided midfielder Adam Johnson.

There were call-ups for several Tottenham Hotspur players, as Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon and Ledley King are all included in the provisional squad.

Huddlestone was not widely anticipated to receive the call, but he, and Darren Bent of Sunderland, have been shown that league form will secure at least a chance to impress under the Capello administration.

Capello has been in slightly hot water this week after having to shelve his “Capello Index” venture following widespread media criticism, but the results on the pitch, if his early squad selection is anything to go by, are more likely to be influenced by player form, than media noise.

Capello has selected a squad of players that are the best thirty English players from the past season, he has not picked on reputation, unlike many respected media pundits.

Maybe there is something in this Capello Index, after all? One thing is for sure, we will know more after the first England game, against the USA, of World Cup 2010, kicks off.
