Football: Bolton 2-0 York, FA Cup 2011 Third Round

Davies 83(HT 0-0)
Elmander 89

Non-league outfit, York City, could have been forgiven for thinking they had done enough to secure a home replay with Bolton Wanderers, of the Barclays Premier League, in their FA Cup 2011 Third Round match on Saturday 8th January 2011. Bolton left it late, before scoring twice in the final seven minutes to progress with a 2-0 win.

Kevin Davies spared the Premier side’s blushes by hammering a Martin Petrov cross into the top corner on 83 minutes, before Johan Elmander made the victory secure with a good-looking curled effort from 25 yards out with one minute remaining.

York, however, could easily have been leading when Davies’ goal went in, as they produced a number of good opportunities without finding the killer blow in 80 minutes of evenly matched football. While Bolton edged possession, it was in converting this into shots where the Premier League team were much better than their opponents: Bolton worked the York goalkeeper 13 times in all in this match, showing their class in the final third.

York, who sit 14th in the Blue Square Premier, will hope that this solid performance can propel them back towards the football league. Bolton go into the bag for the FA Cup 2011 Fourth Round.
