Football: Blackburn 1-0 QPR, FA Cup 2011 Third Round

Hoilett 77(HT 0-0)

Blackburn Rovers left it late to put out Championship front-runners Queens Park Rangers in their FA Cup 2011 Third Round clash on Saturday, 8th January 2011. Blackburn went through 1-0 following a 77th minute goal from David Hoilett.

Until Hoilett’s late winner, QPR, who sit five points clear at the top of the nPower Championship, looked to be on course to secure a replay. However, their main disappointment from this match was the double leg fracture suffered by striker Jamie Mackie, which came from a horrible-looking collision with Blackburn’s Gael Givet, who was also carried from the field of play, after half an hour.

Despite Blackburn dominating for much of this match, Rangers hit the woodwork twice in the opening 45, and could easily have led 1-0 at half time.

As it was, Blackburn secured their progression to the next round with a goal from an unlikely source: Hoilett hadn’t scored for more than 16 months before his finish here.

Blackburn deserved their win, as they had slightly more possession, and twice as many shots on target (8) as QPR (4), though the void between these two clubs does not appear to be a great one – these teams could easily be facing each other in league football next season, when QPR might hope for at least a goal better result.
