Barclays Premier League football took place last night, on the evening of Wednesday 10th November 2010, as 16 of the league’s 20 sides were in action.
The nights headline act, the Manchester Derby between City and United at Eastlands turned out to be a rather uninspiring scoreless draw.
Leaders Chelsea returned to winning ways with a 1-0 home win over Fulham. Michael Essien provided the only goal of the game, before being sent off for picking up a straight red card, for a dangerous tackle, late in the game.
Aston Villa picked up three points at home to Blackpool. The Midlands outfit won 3-2 with a late winner from defender James Collins after the recently promoted Blackpool side looked to have secured a vital 2-2 point despite naming a side with 10 changes from the weekend’s starting line-up.
Blackburn Rovers travelled to Newcastle United and upset the Geordies’ recent run of fine form by picking up a 2-1 away win. Jason Roberts proved the difference with an 82nd minute winner after Newcastle looked to have got away with a point following their 47th minute Andy Carroll equaliser.
Arsenal picked up the only other win of the night as they grabbed a goal in either half – one right at the start, and a late-late addition, both through Chamakh, who scored in seconds and in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Wolves once again looked impressive in patches, and Mick McCarthy will be hoping for a run of improved results against slightly weaker opposition.
Everton scored a late equaliser in their home match against Bolton, which finished 1-1.
In a see-sawing match at the Boleyn Ground, West Ham United and West Brom played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. The Baggies took a 38th minute through an Odemwingie penalty before Scott Parker equalised for the hosts with two minutes of the first half remaining. A Piquionne penalty five minutes into the second period looked to have bagged a vital three points for the hosts until Pablo levelled and claimed a share of the points for West Brom.
Liverpool will be disappointed not to have continued their recent winning ways, particularly as Fernando Torres was on target once more to open the scoring in their visit to Wigan Athletic. The hosts eventually equalised in the 52nd minute through Rodallega after Torres had opened the scoring on 7 minutes with a well-taken goal.
