Eight Barclays Premier League fixtures yielded eight victories on Saturday January 1st 2011.
West Brom 1-2 Man Utd
Manchester United kept up their title challenge by recording only their second away victory of the season at West Brom with a 2-1 victory in the day’s early kick-off. Wayne Rooney headed the league leaders in front on 3 minutes, before Morrison equalised on 14 for the hosts. Javier Hernandez came off the bench to head home the winner from a Rooney corner on 75 minutes, though United avoided their eighth away draw of the season, and even a defeat, primarily as a result of Odemwingie’s missed penalty minutes before Hernandez’ goal.
Liverpool 2-1 Bolton
Roy Hodgson must have felt the pressure on his position as manager building as Bolton took the lead at Anfield through Davies on 43 minutes, but goals from Torres (49 minutes) and substitute Joe Cole (92 minutes) will have taken a weight off his shoulders and may have bought a reprieve for a game or two, though Liverpool will still worry at how tough their victory came this afternoon. Liverpool rise to 9th in the league, while Bolton slide to 7th.
Man City 1-0 Blackpool
Man City retain their share of the points at the top of the table with their red neighbours courtesy of a tough 1-0 victory at home to Blackpool. City’s win came via a 34th minute Adam Johnson strike, though Blackpool will be disappointed that, despite their superior shot count, they consistently found Joe Hart too good in the Man City net.
Stoke 2-0 Everton
10th played 11th in the Stoke v Everton match, so the hosts will be happy to pick up three points via a 23rd minute Jones finish and a 69th minute Jagielka own goal. Everton had more than enough chances to come away with a point, but a combination of slightly below par finishing, and a magnificent performance – once again – from Begovic in Stoke’s net saw them frustrated today.
Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn
Sunderland got back to winning ways with goals from their three in-form forwards, Wellbeck (11 mins), Bent (19 mins) and Gyan (89 mins). The Black Cats rise to 6th in the league table as a result. Blackburn drop to 11th place, level, on 25 points, with Liverpool and Blackpool.
Tottenham 1-0 Fulham
Tottenham Hotspur rose to fourth in the Barclays Premier League with a tricky 1-0 home win over London rivals Fulham. Once again, Spurs inspiration proved to be Gareth Bale, who scored in the 42nd minute for the hosts. Tottenham also recorded their second clean sheet in succession, and look much more solid at the back now that captain Michael Dawson is back fit at the heart of their defence.Fulham remain in the drop zone.
West Ham 2-0 Wolverhampton
West Ham lifted themselves out of the relegation places with a good 2-0 win at home to Wolves. A second half goal from Freddie Sears (79 mins) added to a Zubar own goal (51 mins) to give the Hammers the vital three points.
Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal
In the day’s late kick-off, Arsenal secured three points to remain two points behind the Manchester sides in third position via goals from Van Persie (13 mins), Nasri (58 mins) and an own goal from Johnson (66 mins).
