Arsenal left it late before coming up with a vital winner in the 88th minute from the head of Alex Song to maintain their 2010/11 Barclays Premier League title challenge in their home fixture against West Ham on Saturday, 30th October 2010.
With mere minutes remaining, Song produced a fine header from a floated Clichy centre.
Prior to their goal, Robert Green had looked to have earned West Ham, who sit bottom of the table following this result, a difficult point against high-flying Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal had looked to have produced enough fine flowing football to pick up three points, but for the good form Green displayed to deny Fabregas – twice – and Theo Walcott. The Hammers also rode their luck, somewhat, as Nasri and Walcott both hit the framework during 85 minutes of football which would otherwise have seen them, while below their brilliant best, en route to another straightforward victory.
As it was, they showed good spirit to remain in the hunt and pick up the vital goal. As Chelsea also scored late, and picked up three points in their match against another relegation candidate, Blackburn, this goal could well be important come the season’s end.
Arsenal remain in second place in the Premier League, five points behind leader’s and last seasons Champs, Chelsea.
