Bernard Bannon, a celebrated war veteran and former mathematician, was the least likely person who would suffer a fool. So his family were shocked when after his death they found out he had been scammed out of his life savings, £70,000, to a cynical junk mail scheme. Mr Bannon’s son Lenny, 73, had suspected his father was the target of scammers for a while and was forced to intercept scam mail daily to help his father, who was struggling with dementia. But it wasn’t until Bernard passed away in 2016, that Lenny realised the full extent of Bernard’s scamming nightmare. Lenny joins us now alongside his wife Pat, to detail the heartbreaking event.
