Joe McElderry, 18, of Tyneside last night won the UK television musical talent search series, X Factor.

McElderry had the support of the staunchly loyal North East of England – “Vote Joe” was even displayed on the electronic signs on the A19 Tyne Tunnel dual carriageway – as well as his mentor on the show, Cheryl Cole who comes from a similar part of the country.

Joe McElderry’s single “The Climb”, released today, is expected to be the biggest selling single in the UK this Christmas, with bookmakers making the star just 1/8 to be the official Christmas Number One in 2009.

X Factor is expected to have pulled in a record beaking TV audience of up to 20 million viewers for the finale which took place yesterday evening with a 2 hour spectacular.

X Factor, another brainchild of Simon Cowell, has reputedly earned ITV, the television network carrying the show, in the region of £75 million in revenue, news which will be welcome to investors who had a torrid time in 2008.

X Factor follows hot on the heels of Britain’s Got Talent and I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! successes for ITV.

Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”. There are different systems for collecting votes, but while many of the systems used in decision-making can also be used as electoral systems, any which cater for proportional representation can only be used in elections.

In smaller organizations, voting can occur in different ways. Formally via ballot to elect others for example within a workplace, to elect members of political associations or to choose roles for others. Informally voting could occur as a spoken agreement or as a verbal gesture like a raised hand or electronically.
