Athletics: Tyson Gay Defeats Usain Bolt in Stockholm

15,472 spectators – more, even, than the official capacity – crammed into the stadium in Stockholm, Sweden, for the much anticipated  final of the Samsung Diamond League 100 metres today.

American record holder, Tyson Gay, caused an upset by beating World Record holder Usain Bolt. The USA sprinter recorded a time of 9.84 seconds.

Speaking after the race, Jamaican Bolt said simply “I told you I’m not unbeatable” after recording a time of 9.97, the second slowest he has ever achieved in a final.

Gay has been putting in a huge amount of work since being blown away by 2008 Olympic Champion, Bolt, and, in only their third meeting, the American looks to have thrown Athletics’ flagship event wide open once more.

Gay was magnanimous, however, in victory, as he said he was “looking forward to when Usain and Asafa will be in 9.6 shape to race with them” highlighting the fact that Bolt had not been at his best during this evening’s event – something which had been apparent when, after Gay’s explosive start, Bolt failed to make his customary mid-late race acceleration to catch the American.

For Bolt, it certainly is not a major wobble, though he must be a little concerned that anything other than sheer brilliance will, on today’s evidence, end with him in second place.
