It’s not often that a newspaper reporter gets the Hollywood treatment, but then it’s not often a news reporter brings down a US President. In the early 1970s over several years Carl Bernstein, along with Bob Woodward broke the Watergate story for The Washington Post, leading to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. In 1976, it was made into a movie, with Robert Redford as Woodward, Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein. Later in the 1980’s Bernstein again was played by a leading man – this time, Jack Nicolson in a movie written by his ex-wife about the break-down of their marriage. After bringing down Nixon, Bernstein has continued to focus on the theme of the use and abuse of power via books and magazine articles. He’s lately written about Hillary Clinton and is now, as a commentator for CNN looking at Trump. His latest story – based on reports of highly classified phone calls – finds that US officials believe Trump’s handling of highly classified calls with foreign heads of state makes “the President himself posed a danger to the national security of the United States.”
