Lewis and Hathaway make plans for the August bank holiday weekend but are interrupted by the murder of a former Oxford student attending a quiz weekend. Chaucer college becomes the scene of a twisting murder investigation which deals with sexual tension, espionage and scandal.

The appearance of Alan Davies as the quiz master leads to several tongue-in-cheek references to TV quizzes, as well as mentions of Cluedo as the weekend guests are locked into the college and suspicion settles upon the variety of quiz players. The panellist from Q.I. and former star of Jonathan Creek said of the new Lewis series:

There’s nothing wrong with all the different types of shows out there but it’s nice every now and then to get a really good quality, almost old fashioned, drama. Not old fashioned in the content but in the values which perhaps aren’t always strived for in TV these days.

Sudden Death is written by Alan Plater and will air on 16th May 2010 at 8pm. If you miss it, simply catch up on ITV Player (UK viewers only).
