“Hellcats” is the best cheerleading story on screen since “Bring It On”. In fact, the new “intelligent cheerleader” series even references the genre-defining film when the protagonist Marti engages in a prolonged montage as she scrubs up on some pom pom moves.
It has everything a girl (or guy!) could want with sleepovers, catfights, mean moves and plenty of love interest. Without spoiling the fun, a hard-working law student finds that her scholarship has been cut and she must brave the preppy, the wicked and the driven to secure a place on another program, one of which includes cheerleading.
Based on the book,‘Cheer! Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders’ by Kate Torgvonick the series provides yet another insight into American college life as well as a real taste of Memphis, Tennessee with ribs, big vowels and religious students who still pray at night.
