“Spiderman” Director to make World of Warcraft Film

Sam Raimi, who directed the last three “Spiderman” films, has agreed to direct a film based on the World of Warcraft games series for release as early as 2012. Mr Raimi still has another Spiderman movie to make this Autumn before filming on the new project can begin.

Warner are expected to co-finance the efforts along with Legendary Pictures who were behind “The Dark Knight” and “300”. Charles Roven, a producer of “The Dark Knight,” is among the producers of the “Warcraft” film.

Raimi said of the Warcraft game:

At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action packed story. I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.

Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull said of Raimi’s appointment:

Sam’s passion for “Warcraft” is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard’s phenomenal franchise.

With more than 11 million monthly subscribers, the Warcraft series is one of the most heavily played online multiplayer games. Warcraft’s recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, is the fastest selling PC game of all time with 2.8 million copies sold in the first 24 hours and 4 million in the first month.
