Good Morning Britain asked if banning offensive words and phrases really works to change behaviour.
A university has abandoned using the word ‘freshers’ due to its ‘negative connotations’ and will instead rebrand the week new students move to the university as ‘Welcome 2020’.
This is just the latest censorship of language in a year which has already seen Scrabble removing offensive slurs such as ‘papist’ and ‘Jesuit’ and estate agents move away from the term ‘Master bedroom’.
‘Batsman’ is also under fire in cricket as is the phrase ‘turning blue’ in medicine.
Does banning words and phrases improve the lives of those they may offend or is it a dangerous censorship that threatens to erode our freedoms?
