But with more than one in five secondary school pupils in England missing school last week, due to worsening Covid disruption, and with the tier system returning, would it make sense for those schools in the highest restrictions to close now? Tru Powell, father of four believes that they should should stay open, as his children’s mental health suffered. Vic Goddard, co-principal of Passmores Academy and star of Educating Essex, believes that schools should be able to make their own decisions but should definitely be allowed to close. Susan Michie, behavioural psychologist and member of SAGE believes that we definitely need to close schools, there’s no question about it. If you look at the data, infections are going up in schools. Mike Tildesley, professor of infectious disease and sub-group of SAGE, believes that we should keep schools open, it will have huge implications in the long term for education, and to the psychological wellbeing of students.
