Sal Governale Misuses the Word “Mitigation”

Mitigate means “smooth over” – for example, if you mitigate a disaster, you make it less bad. But, as Humpty Dumpty said in Through the Looking Glass:

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass
