A Lebanese nurse has been hailed a heroine after saving the lives of three premature babies following the devastating explosion at the port of Beirut. Pamela Zeinoun was working on the maternity ward at the city’s Saint George Hospital last Tuesday. The hospital was badly damaged by the massive explosion and four of the hospital’s nursing staff lost their lives, as well as 12 patients and a visitor. She was knocked unconscious and came round to find other doctors and nurses injured, ceilings collapsed, rooms strewn with rubble and equipment smashed on the floor. Then she spotted her tiny patients – a twin brother and sister and another baby – who were still alive in their blood-spattered incubators. Amid the confusion as she was escaping from the hospital, and still clutching the three newborns, she stopped to answer the emergency room phone, a moment that was captured by the photojournalist Bilal Jawich.
