At least 135 people were killed and 5000 injured in the Beirut explosion on Tuesday. Homes and businesses in the Lebanese capital have been torn apart and it is estimated that 300,000 people are homeless and rescuers are continuing to look for people. A two week state national emergency has been declared and Beirut port officials have been placed under house arrest pending an investigation into the blast. The Mayor of Beirut Jamal Itani says that they will rebuild Beirut and provide temporary homes for everyone who has lost theirs. Mayor Jamai Itani says that the explosion was avoidable however he doesn’t feel guilty as it is the government’s responsibility and he didn’t have the authority to do anything. Tom Tugendhat who is the chair of the foreign affairs select committee and lived in Beirut believes that the military support offered by Britain is limited.
