Mariusz Waras on Painting Graffiti for F1 with Kimi Räikkönen

Mariusz Waras, known as M-City, recently had the privilege of applying his unique style of graffiti art to the new Lotus™ F1™ Team car. Kimi Räikkönen was on hand to help with the spray painting at the party held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on 8th May 2013.

The Burn Yard party series celebrates burn energy drink’s sponsorship of the Lotus F1 team.

Mariusz took some time out to tell The Global Herald about his art and working with an F1 driver:

What type of spray paints did you use for the Burn Yard exhibition?

Montana 94 and Acrylic

How do you prepare the stencils?

First I sketch out the designs and then use specialized stencil paper, which has a wax coat. The designs are then individually hand –cut out, this bit always takes a bit of time .

Was Kimi Räikkönen any good at painting?

Kimi told me that he has used spray paints before and knew what to do. Kimi style!

You’ve been lecturing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk – do you stick to urban art when teaching?

I assist the Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk and I teach many styles of art, from classical to street art. My personal style is street art though.

Urban art is inextricably linked with music – what do you listen to?

I like all kinds of music depends what mood I am in … but when I am cutting stencils usually I am focused. Sometimes silence is my music!

Where will you be exhibiting next?

Belarus – Minsk exhibition at the end of June. Then on to Budapest for the F1 weekend and burn yard event in July. I am looking to do something also in New York too this year …

If you could tag anything, what would you tag?

A plane, ship or maybe the NASA space station!

What does the future hold for you & your art?

My work has been influenced from where I live/ grew up which is to next to a shipping yard and industrial landscape. I have travelled around the world painting and have seen great engineering, similar to the technology that is present in F1.

Traveling for me and seeing the world as a landscape is the most important thing for me.  I have done many murals around the world the biggest can be found in LA which is 85m long.

I will carry on doing what I do best –  traveling, looking for inspiration and painting on a large scale.
