Boris Johnson has warned that the spread of coronavirus is likely to become more significant across the UK as the number of people infected climbed to 40. Four new cases – among people from Hertfordshire, south Devon and Kent – were announced on Monday. Ministers have unveiled an emergency plan to be enacted if the virus becomes more widespread in the UK. Emergency measures include: police being reduced to just dealing with very serious crimes and maintaining public order, the NHS could be closed to all but critical care and social distancing strategies could be implemented, which would include school closures, home working, and reducing the number of large scale gatherings.

Health secretary Matt Hancock explains the measures and also address the bullying allegations against home secretary Priti Patel.
