Inside Gaming published this video item, entitled “Kotaku’s boss is out, now what?” – below is their description.
Last week, Stephen Toilo the Editor-in-Chief for Kotaku.com for the last ten years, submitted his resignation. It’s certainly the end of an era when such a well-known games industry veteran decides to move on and we’re excited to see what’s next.
However, we are also anxious about the future of Kotaku as the site has had a long string of departures since it was bought by the equity firm Great Hill Partners back in 2019. The new management already unintentionally dismantled one of Kotaku’s sister sites, Deadspin, by strong-arming and firing editorial staff over content direction causing a walkout.
The departures we’ve seen are probably still an aftershock of that as others from Kotaku make a safe exit to jobs elsewhere in the games industry. Totilo only commented briefly in his farewell post about the turmoil Kotaku has faced over the years being bought and sold by different companies so it might not be the reason he decided to leave… but it could still be a factor.
In any case, we wish everyone still at Kotaku the best and hope the site can continue to live on without too much meddling from its corporate overlord.
