Justice League Snyder Cut: All Differences From the Theatrical Version

IGN published this video item, entitled “Justice League Snyder Cut: All Differences From the Theatrical Version” – below is their description.

With the HBO Max 2021 release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League arriving after years of fans campaigning Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, viewers can finally see how the Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director’s original vision of the movie compares to the Justice League theatrical cut released in 2017. After Snyder departed the project midway through, WB brought on Avengers director Joss Whedon to re-write, reshoot, and heavily edit the Justice League movie in order to make it funnier, shorter, and lighter in tone. We breakdown the differences between the Snyder Cut and the Whedon Cut.

There are many big picture changes, such as the square, full-frame 1.33 (4:3) aspect ratio (aka IMAX ratio), an R-rating for violence and language (Batman and Cyborg use the F word!), the original composer Thomas Holkenborg (AKA Junkie XL) is back instead of the Whedon Cut’s Danny Elfman, the Snyder Cut runtime is now four hours long with six chapters, there are extended action scenes, the coloring is more desaturated, and while the Snyder Cut does still have a sense of humor, many of the one-liners have been removed.

As for the changes to the Justice League 2021 vs 2017, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) now has more scenes with Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons), a pair of tech side-quests, and his arc better follows up on the death of Superman (Henry Cavill) at the hands of Doomsday in BvS. Speaking of Superman, he now has a comics-accurate black suit when he’s resurrected, which is a change from the classic red-and-blue suit he wore in the Whedon Cut. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) has more action and her scenes bonding with Batfleck are gone in favor of more scenes showing the entire team forming together. Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller) has a big difference, we get to see him save Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) in Central City, setting up the solo Flash movie. Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) plays a more brooding King of Atlantis and has a restored scene with Vulko (Willem Dafoe) who was completely cut from the Whedon version of Justice League. And then there’s Victor Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who ZS restored to the heart of the film as the heroes search for the three Mother Boxes to stop the villains.

Speaking of the villains, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) has a redesign and better sense of motivation, and we see him interact with Desaad and of course the big bad DC villain himself, Darkseid (Ray Porter). Darkseid has been added back into the Justice League movie, a change that now shows him in the flashback battle with the Greek gods, humans, Atlanteans, Amazons and a Green Lantern. Darkseid’s role in the movie makes the end battle different as it sets up future Justice League movies, even though Zack Snyder has said he has no plans to make a Justice League 2 (but we can still hope, right?).

All of these changes to Justice League and more are covered in the video analyzing all of the big changes now that we finally have the Snyder Cut on HBO Max.
