How the Villain Can Make a Superhero Movie Great?

IGN published this video item, entitled “How the Villain Can Make a Superhero Movie Great?” – below is their description.

As the saying goes, a hero is nothing without their villain. With IGN’s Super Movie Madness underway, we’ve decided to take a deeper look into what separates a good superhero movie from a great one. In our first video, we’re going to look at how complex villains can provide deeper insights into the heroes trying to vanquish them.

Whether it be physical, psychological, or ideological, villains can provide contrast to a hero in many ways. Bane vs. Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, proved that Bane (Tom Hardy) was the ultimate physical foil to Batman (Christian Bale). Not only is he in better shape, but also had the same training as Batman. And in the Bane scenes where he traded blows with the Bat, it became clear that Batman was going to need to overcome a lot to defeat his facemasked foe. And in the process, Bruce Wayne realized Batman needed more than just brute strength to defeat his foes.

The next film we look at comes from Pixar. It’s The Incredibles directed by Brad Bird. In this film, we look at how Syndrome, the film’s villain, forces Mr. Incredible to confront the fact that his glory days are behind him.

Finally, we’ll dig into one of the most memorable villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Erik Killmonger. After the death of his father, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) ascends to the throne of Wakanda and becomes Black Panther. Wakanda is at a crossroads does it continue to remain an insular country or does it do more to help people of African descent around the world. Meanwhile, Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) believes the latter and has eyes on the Wakandan thrown to make his beliefs a reality. T’Challa ultimately defeats Killmonger in battle but his views are forever changed because of his conflict with Erik.
