Last week it was revealed that the Australian Government would introduce the toughest laws in the world when it comes to online trolling. This historical, legislative and social milestone is setting a standard that the rest of the world might well follow. The new rules will see fines of up to $111,000 (£60,000) for individuals and over half a million Aus dollars (£280,000) for corporations like Facebook and Twitter, who refuse to take down offensive material or reveal the identities of perpetrators. Australian broadcaster Erin Molan has experienced an avalanche of online bullying throughout her career and has lobbied the Australian government for meaningful change. She predicts: “The first person who gets $110,000 fine … 99 per cent of this will stop.”
