This week, several news outlets covered the removal, restoration and sale of a genuine Banksy artwork – Bristol’s Glitter Gorilla, from the wall of the Jalalabad Community centre, Eastville, Bristol, UK, but many neglected to mention where the online sale is taking place, at the below link.
The artwork was originally painted by the artist back in 2001, on the community centre, before later being accidentally painted over.
Earlier this month, the wall was entirely removed by a group called Exposed Walls, who have now offered the work for sale to the highest bidder, in an online auction. At the time of writing, the price has reached £100,001, but the reserve has not, yet, been met.
The auction ends on 17 November 2020 – giving hopeful bidders plenty of time. Exposed Walls mention a previous Banksy artwork going for $12million, in the listing, which reads:
Aerosol on concrete “Glitter Gorilla” by Banksy
Executed in 2001 on the outer wall of Jalalabad Community centre, Eastville, Bristol .
The Glitter Gorilla depicts a Gorilla holding a pink masquerade mask. To date, Apes and Gorillas are Banksy most sought after pieces. In 2019 his painting “ Devolved Parliament “ sold for a record $12 million.
