Egypt: Hosni Mubarak Ends Presidential Rule

Hosni Mubarak has left his post as President after 18 days of protests in Egypt which has left the world’s leaders and media guessing as to whether and when he would capitulate.

Omar Suleiman announced the resignation saying:

“In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful, my fellow citizens, in these difficult circumstances our country is experiencing President Mohammad Hosni Mubarak has decided to waive the office of the President of the Republic and has instructed the supreme council of the armed forces to run the affairs of the country. May God guide our steps.”

The power of government has been handed to the supreme council of the military.
