Côte D’Ivoire: Presidential Election Campaign Begins

Citizens in Côte D’Ivoire will go to the polls on 31st October 2010 after five years of delays to the election. The front runners for the campaign are; incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo, former President Henri Konan Bedié and former Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara.

The UN peacekeeping force in Côte d’Ivoire, known as UNOCI, has already flown in hundreds of additional soldiers to reinforce its 8,650 troops already there, with a view to maintaining a peaceful vote.

Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s largest coca producer and has seen political instability since military coup in 1999.
