Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. has been awarded the contract to build the largest-ever federal windfarm in the United States.
Five 2.3 megawatt wind turbines will be erected at the Pantex Wind Farm in Amarillo, Texas.
The contract was awarded by the National Nuclear Security Administration, who anticipate savings of $2.9 million annually over 20 years.
NNSA Production Office Manager Steve Erhart commented:
“Three years of hard work, dedication and determination have paid off. The NNSA’s goal was to turn Texas wind into energy, and we have overcome numerous hurdles in implementing the contracting strategy.”
Siemens estimates that the facility will provide 47 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year – enough to power nearly 3,500 homes. The farm will reduce CO2 emissions by over 35,000 metric tons per year – equivalent to removing over 7,200 cars from the road each year or planting over 850,000 trees.
In 2012, the Siemens Energy Sector had revenues of EUR27.5 billion and received new orders totalling approximately EUR26.9 billion and posted a profit of EUR2.2 billion. On September 30, 2012, the Energy Sector had a work force of almost 86,000.
