Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation are to work with Dredging International (part of DEME) on a subcontract to dredge 26 million cubic metres of clay and rock around the Wheatstone LNG Project on the North-West cost of Australia.
The approach channel, maneuvering area and the berths for the Chevron-operated gas plant will be created as part of a AUD 1.13 billion deal. Great Lakes expects to receive around $180 million for its part. The project is located near the town of Onslow, and it is hoped that the activities will create around 350 jobs, including 70 in Western Australia, 40 in Pilbara region and 90 throughout Australia.
The first shipments of liquified natural gas are expected to be moved in 2016. Great Lakes’ contract is expected to last for around 27 months for which it will use the dredge New York. Two 5,000 cubic yard material barges will also be used, along with tug boats and ancillary support equipment.
