BBC Wins Exclusive UK Rights to Olympics Until 2020

The BBC has won the exclusive broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games in the UK until 2020.

The state broadcaster won rights to the XXII Olympic Winter Games (2014) in Sochi, Russia; the Games of the XXXI Olympiad (2016) in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; and the XXIII Olympic Winter Games (2018) in PyeongChang; as well as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020, which have yet to be awarded to a host city. The deal covers internet and mobile coverage.

Mark Thompson, Director-General, BBC commented:

“I’m delighted that the Olympic Games will continue to be broadcast exclusively on the BBC into the 2020’s. It’s terrific news in the days before BBC Sport begins to cover the London 2012 Games and a tribute to the enduring partnership between the BBC and the Olympic Movement”.

The British Broadcasting Corporation receives funds from the TV licence fee levied on all households using television in the UK. It also receives revenue from a limited company, BBC Worldwide, which purchases BBC program and products for resale abroad.
