Business: Thales Australia wins HMAS Newcastle Repair Contract

Thales Australia, part of the Thales Group (NYSE Euronext Paris: HO), has won the contract for scheduled repair and maintenance of HMAS Newcastle from the Defence Materiel Organisation. The contract is worth approximately $8.7 million and is anticipated to involve 100 Thales personnel with further support from subcontractors.

Thales Group operates in 50 countries and has a total of 68,000 employees. The group designs, builds and repairs a wide range of defence, aerospace and space exploration equipment.

The Defence Materiel Organisation has budgeted to spend approximately $79M on ship repair and maintenance in the Sydney region this year and $81M in 2011. In early October, the DMO also announced that $12 to $17 million worth of work would be undertaken in HMA Ships Kanimbla and Manoora in the Sydney region over the coming months.
