Brownlee Brothers to Attend Opening of Round-the-World Sailing Race

Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee will be welcomed on board the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing boat on Saturday as part of the opening events of the Volvo Ocean Race.

An in-port race in Alicante at the weekend will kickstart the nine month sailing race, which is the longest sporting event in the world.

The in-port races provide points which count in the event of a tie, but they also give fans a chance to see something of a race which mostly takes place far offshore in gruelling conditions. Events in Alicante start at 1400 local time on 4th October 2014.

The bi-annual race is over 38,000 nautical miles long and this, the 12th edition, will finish in Gothenburg, Sweden with a final in-port race on June 27, 2015.

The teams are:

  • Team SCA (Sweden)
  • Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing
  • Team Brunel (The Netherlands)
  • Dongfeng Race Team (China)
  • Team Alvimedica (Turkey/U.S.)
  • MAPFRE (Spain)
  • Team Vestas Wind (Denmark).
