Bentley’s new Continental GT3 race car made its running debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday 12th July 2013. Following its unveiling at 10:15, the car took to the hill in the afternoon. 2003 Le Mans champion, Guy Smith, piloted the race car around the Goodwood track in the South of England.
The Continental GT3 is Bentley’s first racer for a decade. It boasts a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, six-speed sequential racing gearbox, double wishbone suspension, four-way adjustable dampers and competition brakes.
Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, has been leading a team in partnership with M-Sport Ltd to get the new car race ready:
“Not one single part of the GT3 has escaped our attention, and the result is a car that can compete with the field in terms of factors such as power, weight and aerodynamics.”
That attention also succeeded in removing a full 1000kg of weight from the luxury Grand Tourer – out went the double glazing, away went fifty ECUs and extensive electrical systems were removed in favour of a leaner, meaner racing machine. The main body of the car is relatively similar to the road model, except the doors, boot lid and bonnet are now hand-crafted in carbon fibre.
Bentley Motorsport Chief Designer Graham Humphrys and M-Sport’s Chief Engineer, Christian Loriaux have been working on the model since the concept racer was unveiled in Paris in September 2012.
