Melbourne’s air quality dropped to the ‘worst in the world’ overnight as smoke from bushfires choked the city.
Ambulance Victoria recorded a spike in call-outs for breathing issues, while the Metropolitan Fire Brigade responded to nearly 200 false alerts caused by the haze.
The pollution forced pools and beaches to be closed and raised serious health concerns for players preparing for the Australian Open.
